BATTLE OF THE BANDS AT THE RIVER IN RANCHO MIRAGE 2024 PRESENTED BY SPOTLIGHT 29 CASINO

SUBMISSION RULES:

1. Beginning on May 1st, please submit your video entry by uploading it to the Dropbox link which is found on The River’s website @theriveratranchomirage.com. Deadline for submission is May 31st, 2024.

2. Bands must submit a one song demo video/recording in order to qualify for the contest. A cover or an original will be accepted. Band must have at least one original song in their repertoire which will be played during the competition night.

3. Lyrics may not include profanity, derogatory remarks, sexually explicit content or violence. Political statements will not be allowed.

4. Online registration form must be filled out when your demo/video/recording is submitted (MP3 & Video). All forms can be found on The River website under Battle of the Bands tab. @www.theriveratranchomirage.com

5. A panel of judges will vote on the final 9 bands chosen between June 1st- June 15th to determine the top 9 bands to be competing.

6. The top 9 finalists will be announced on July 1st, 2024. We will contact you directly as well as announce in a post online. @ www. theriveratranchomirage.com

7. Each band submission will need to pay a $25.00 fee. Band may send in a cashier’s check to The River or pay online under the Battle of the Bands Tab. Only bands that have submitted both their online registration and payment will qualify for review.

8. BANDS MUST BE AVAILABLE TO PERFORM ALL SATURDAYS IN OCTOBER, 5 TH ,12 TH ,19 TH , 26 TH FROM 7-9PM. ONCE BANDS ARE SELECTED – EACH BAND WILL BE BOOKED FOR ONE SATURDAY. PLEASE LEAVE THE FINALE SATURDAY OPEN TOO.

BAND RULES:

1. All bands must contain a minimum of three (3) members. All members must sign that they have read and understand the registration form. If you have any questions, please clear them up with The River Event Department prior to signing the form.

2. All band members must be 18 years of age or older. If a band member is 16-17 years of age then a parental signature is required.

3. Most/all band members must be local to the Coachella and Yucca Valley.

4. Bands may bring 2 roadies to assist them with set-up and break-down and they must also be listed on the registration form under “roadie”.

5. Only band members and roadies listed on the registration form will be admitted on stage.

6. All bands agree to have their name, voice, and/or likeness used in any advertising or broadcasting material relating to this contest without compensation or rights to royalties for such use.

7. On the day of performance, band members must be dressed in clothing free from obscenities and political statements.

8. Band name and lyrics of performance songs should not contain any obscenities.

9. Judges can deduct points for any use of obscenities.

10. The use of any illegal substances will not be tolerated. If any band member is suspected to be under the influence of an illegal substance, the entire band will be disqualified and the proper authorities will be notified. Excessive consumption of alcohol or use of marijuana will cause disqualification.

11. All band members are required to be present at least 2 hours prior to performance time to check in with the coordinator. If all band members are not present on side stage and ready for performance 1 hour prior to stage call time then band will be disqualified.

12. All participants are required to be courteous and respectful toward other participating musicians, audience attendees and judges.

13. Performer hereby grants The River rights of usage to all photography, videos, and audio recordings submitted during or in connection with the event. For any purpose, including publicity and promotion of the event in its entirety.

EQUIPMENT AND ONSTAGE RULES:

● Participating bands will be informed which equipment will be provided once chosen.

● Band members are responsible for the security of their own equipment.

● Each band will be given the opportunity to play 4 songs. One of which must be an original song.

● A sound tech will be provided.

● There will be a strict time limit of 30 minutes for each band on stage. Please plan your songs accordingly.

● Each band will be given 10 minutes to set up and 10 minutes to break down their own equipment so please keep this in mind when creating your set.

● While one band is playing, the next band should be waiting near amphitheater with event coordinator but not inside stage area. No disruptive behavior.

● Bands may not use pre-recorded sound material. All bands must play live.

JUDGING RULES:

1. The judging system is designed to keep the contest open to all song choices while keeping the event fair and competitive. Judges will be instructed to ignore “genre bias”, that is, not to reward a band for playing a type/style of music that the judge personally likes, and, conversely, not to penalize a band simply because the music isn’t agreeable with the judge’s personal taste.

2. There are five categories on which each band will be judged. Each category is worth 100 points. At the end of each performance, the total number of points a band receives from each judge will be added together with the other judges to reach the band’s final score.In the event of a tie, there will be a tiebreaker in which each band in the tie will have an opportunity to play one song of their choice. Tie will be decided by audience.

JUDGING CRITERIA:

BAND PREPAREDNESS:

1.Evidence of performance planning; i.e. choreography, demonstration of the musical/movement or program dynamics, costumes, makeup, stage props, backdrop, etc...

2. Instruments and equipment made ready prior to performance, start on time, stay within time limits for set-up and break-down.

3.Evidence of rehearsal, bands know the lyrics, bands appeared ready and prepared to play.

ORIGINALITY:

1.How unique do the songs sound?

2. Is the band appearance original? Does the band stand out?

3. Does the band demonstrate any level of original improvisational skill?

4.Are the original songs worthy of airplay?

INTERFACE WITH AUDIENCE:

1.How was the band’s verbal interaction, did the band introduce themselves, did the band talk to or with the audience?

2.How was the band’s physical interaction with each other and with the audience? Did the band physically participate with the audience by giving eye contact, head nods, acknowledgements, waving, dancing with the audience?

3. How confident was the band in their interaction with the audience?

QUALITY OF PERFORMANCE:

1.How was the band’s confidence and competence? Did they look at ease while playing? Were they cohesive together?

2.How was the band stage presence? Did they use the stage effectively, did the band appear positive during their performance, how did the band cope with any problems they may have encountered?

3.Was the band’s set list well-constructed and able to manipulate the audience’s mood?

PRESENTATION:

1.Does the band’s attitude appear suitable to their genre? For example were they “Punk” if Punk, “Raucous” if Rock?

2.How did the audience respond to the band’s performance?
